Lycos Europe finally gave up in their attempt to give-as-they-get to/from spammers. Lycos’ high profile “Make Love Not Spam” screensaver was dropped this week, with reps from the company staying mum on particulars. It is safe to assume that their attempt to slow the servers of the spammers got out of hand, and had the effect of an actual Denial Of Service attack; or maybe they simply invited prohibitive spammer retaliation. We love the fact that Lycos Europe took a chance on asymmetrical tactics in the fight against an intransigent problem. Something really does need to be done about the spammers, and to bastardize a phrase “extremism in pursuit of liberty from spam is no vice”. We all have a dog in this fight, and we will need bold thinking if we are to have a chance of winning. One lost battle in a larger war shouldn’t dissuade the next one in the ring.
